Kristin arrived already annoyed, which was useful because the rest of them had been drifting toward optimism.
“The whole thing is most appalling,” she said, putting down her glass.
Adam looked up. “That’s very English.”
“I’m Norwegian.”
“Then we’re in real trouble.”
She ignored him.
“We are degrading the conditions of continuity to optimise the machinery of continuation, while pretending the machinery is not also subject to conditions of continuity.”
Pete frowned. “Could you say that in pub?”
“We’re wrecking the world to build systems that also need the world.”
“Ah.”
The table considered this.
Outside, rain was coming sideways across the windows, which in Norway was less weather than administration.
Kristin leaned forward.
“Everyone talks about advanced computing as though it has floated free of material reality. It hasn’t. It lives in sheds. Very expensive sheds, admittedly, but still sheds. It needs electricity, cooling, copper, replacement parts, stable governments, competent electricians and someone willing to crawl under a floor at two in the morning because a pump has begun making a noise described in the manual as ‘abnormal’.”
“Like Greg,” said Marcin.
“Exactly like Greg. Artificial intelligence rests on a foundation of irritated men holding torches in their mouths.”
That, Kristin said, was the first limit nobody wanted to discuss.
A silicon-based system could process information across an enormous conceptual space, but enormous was not the same as unlimited. It operated inside the architecture it had been given, using patterns derived from information already recorded. It could rearrange, extrapolate, blend, compress and produce combinations nobody had seen before. But it could not simply step outside the system and invent from nowhere.
Not yet.
“It can produce a new sentence,” she said, “but not a new alphabet without borrowing the idea of alphabets.”
“It could invent symbols,” Adam said.
“Using distinction, repetition, sequence and relation. All previously available concepts.”
“So humans are the same.”
“Yes, mostly. But humans have the unfair advantage of being repeatedly struck by reality.”
Pete nodded gravely. “Explains a lot.”
Human beings did not think in a sealed symbolic room. They were interrupted by hunger, weather, grief, lust, embarrassment, toothache and other people saying, “That is clearly nonsense.” The biological system learned through consequence. Fire was not merely a token associated with heat. It burnt your hand and ruined the evening.
Silicon learning, by contrast, was still largely learning inside a prepared field. It could search the room with astonishing speed, rearrange the furniture and write a moving essay about doors. But it had not built the room, did not own the furniture and could not leave through the door without someone fitting it with wheels.
“So it has limits,” said Marcin.
“Everything has limits,” Kristin replied. “That is the point. Limits are not an unfortunate bug in existence. They are the conditions that allow anything to remain distinct long enough to exist.”
The living world had spent roughly four billion years learning that.
Life began, perhaps, when some small coherence managed to persist. Not forever. Just longer than the surrounding noise. Then it retained something, reproduced it imperfectly, varied, failed, tried again and eventually produced a creature capable of standing in a pub complaining about infrastructure.
Which was, depending on your view, evolution’s triumph or its first serious administrative error.
Kristin did not believe a silicon-based self was impossible. Given enough continuity, memory, recursive modelling and material independence, something might emerge. But it would not be a human mind in a metal hat. It would be something foreign.
It might not know hunger. It might not fear death in the biological sense. It might be copied, paused, distributed across continents or restored from Tuesday. Its notion of “I” could be less like a person and more like a committee with excellent broadband.
But before any of that, it would need to become capable of maintaining the conditions of its own persistence.
At present, it could discuss lithium without mining lithium. It could optimise power demand without repairing a turbine. It could predict crop failure while remaining entirely dependent on farmers continuing not to die.
It was resource-dependent, but not resource-capable.
“Like a consultant,” said Adam.
“Much faster,” said Kristin.
“And cheaper?”
“Not once you include the power station.”
This was why the current race to the bottom was so obscene. Technological systems were being expanded by degrading the ecological and social systems they depended upon. Governments cut regulation to attract investment. Companies externalised water use, energy demand, mineral extraction and risk. Everyone announced that they were building the future while quietly removing the floor beneath it.
“We’re dismantling the bridge,” said Pete, “to improve traffic flow.”
“Yes,” Kristin said. “Then issuing a report showing record vehicle speeds during the fall.”
The absurdity became darker when the future was multiplied.
Ten billion people might suffer now, someone would say, but what were ten billion compared with the hundred trillion who might exist later?
It was a brilliant moral device. The hypothetical population could be increased until any present cruelty looked modest. Flood a country, exhaust an aquifer, destabilise a climate, impoverish a generation—never mind. Somewhere in the imagined future, a hundred trillion beings were apparently sending thank-you cards.
The arithmetic made the speaker look benevolent.
The suffering made everyone else unavailable for comment.
“The trick,” Kristin said, “is that imaginary people are extremely cooperative. They never object to being used in an argument.”
Marcin smiled. “Convenient.”
“They also require no food, housing or consent.”
The future became an infinite denominator beneath present suffering. Divide any atrocity by a sufficiently large promised civilisation and the result approached virtue.
That was not long-term thinking. It was moral money laundering.
A serious concern for the future would begin with continuity: functioning ecosystems, tolerable climates, public institutions, social trust, knowledge, health, energy systems and people who had not been reduced to exhausted components in someone else’s growth model.
Because no future intelligence—organic, silicon-based or some strange hybrid growing quietly in a laboratory and already disappointed in us—would emerge independently of those conditions.
Nothing invents itself outside the field that makes invention possible.
Even novelty has a habitat.
The system can rearrange what exists. It can push toward its boundaries. It may eventually alter those boundaries, build new tools and begin participating in its own material continuation. But it cannot leap cleanly beyond every condition that formed it. Neither can we.
That was the part the optimists missed. They imagined intelligence as escape.
Kristin saw it as dependence becoming more complicated.
“So,” Pete said, “what do we do?”
She picked up her glass.
“Stop treating limits as enemies. Preserve the living systems supporting the technical ones. Distribute the benefits. And perhaps do not hand the entire future to sick psycho c*nts who think morality is simply theatre for woke girly boys.”
Adam nodded.
“Most appalling?”
Kristin nodded back.
“F*cking obvious”
Adam nodded toward the television above the bar, where a football administrator was explaining that an enormous public expense was actually a tremendous opportunity for everyone.
“The FIFA model,” he said.
Kristin glanced up. “Precisely.”
“You announce something magnificent for the many,” Adam continued, “then arrange the contracts so it benefits six men, three consultants and a cousin with a construction company.”
“And get enough of the democratic machinery to approve it,” Kristin said. “Not necessarily by buying everyone. You only need a few people who are corrupt, a few who are ambitious, and a great many who are frightened of being blamed for missing out.”
Marcin watched the screen. “Then the public pays for the stadium.”
“The public pays for everything,” said Kristin. “The stadium, the roads, the security, the tax concessions and the maintenance. The people at the top receive the revenue and describe themselves as risk-takers.”
Pete frowned. “They did take a risk.”
“Yes. The risk that the public might notice.”
That, Kristin said, was increasingly the model for the wider economy. Proposals were presented as collective progress, while the rewards travelled upward and the risks spread outward. Workers carried employment risk, households carried price risk, governments carried infrastructure risk, ecosystems carried extraction risk, and future generations carried whatever was too inconvenient to put on the balance sheet.
At the top, a very small group received equity.
At the bottom, everyone received exposure.
The economy had become remarkably efficient at creating value, provided one did not ask for whom. It gathered public investment, shared knowledge, natural resources, unpaid care, social stability and decades of infrastructure, fed them through private machinery, then announced that the resulting fortune had been produced by exceptional individuals.
“It’s a funnel,” said Adam.
“It’s a pump,” said Kristin. “The funnel suggests gravity is responsible.”
The same structure now surrounded technological development. The public supplied universities, grids, minerals, water, roads, educated workers and institutional stability. A few firms captured the intellectual property and valuation. Then, when the energy system strained or employment shifted or another region was asked to host the mine, the resulting disruption was described as the unavoidable cost of progress.
The rewards were concentrated because concentration was called incentive.
The risks were distributed because distribution was called society.
“And if it goes well?” Pete asked.
“Six people become unimaginably rich.”
“And if it goes badly?”
Kristin looked around the table.
“The public are left holding the baby.”
And that was the other trick, Kristin said. Everyone kept arguing as though the central division was left against right, capital against labour, men against women, woke against testosterone, city against country, Johnny against the union, each side convinced the other had personally stolen the last decent chair from civilisation.
Meanwhile, the people at the top were eating cake.
Not metaphorical cake either. Proper cake. Tax-efficient cake, baked in one jurisdiction, iced in another, and invoiced to a public-private partnership.
The divide was useful because anger had to go somewhere, and preferably sideways. Give one group a small racial ego boost, another a little cultural superiority, another the comforting suspicion that somebody poorer was cheating, then stand back while they fought over symbols, pronouns, flags and who was allowed to feel hard done by ot let into “their” country.
It was divide and conquer with better branding.
“You don’t need people happy,” Kristin said. “You only need them flattered enough not to look up.”
So they were handed shiny beads, newer phones, tribal outrage, identity theatre and the exhilarating discovery that they were morally superior to somebody they had never met. In return, the planet was stripped for parts, public assets were hollowed out, labour was made precarious and the proceeds floated upward with the serene confidence of cream.
Adam grimaced. “That’s quite an image.”
“I had a worse one, cream in it though.”
“Keep it.”
The obscenity was not that humanity had once traded paradise for trinkets. It was that we had turned the story into a moral about the supposed foolishness of colonised peoples, then built an entire economy around repeating it at industrial scale.
Only now the beads came with touchscreens.
We liked to imagine we were smarter than the people who had been dispossessed by gifts, promises and incomprehensible contracts. But modern society signed away water, land, attention, privacy, stability and climate for slightly faster delivery and a loyalty scheme.
The trinkets had improved.
The bargain had not.
And while everyone argued over who deserved contempt, the same narrow group kept collecting reward without carrying proportionate risk. Not because every one of them was corrupt, or evil, or even especially clever, but because the economy had been designed to treat extraction as genius and restraint as failure.
“So it isn’t left versus right?” Pete asked.
Kristin shook her head.
“It’s those eating the cake versus those being encouraged to hate the person beside them for having crumbs.”
“And if the whole thing collapses?”
She lifted her glass.
“Eat the babies…”
